Rewiring a flightless bird (2019)

This project arose out of frustration with San Francisco’s neoliberal policies that have repeatedly subsidized and enabled tech companies to steal and profit from “public” space, while simultaneously criminilazing the members of the public that need that space the most.

San Francisco’s government officials pride themselves on their city being a “safe-haven” for immigrants, queer people, people of color, and other marginalized groups. Yet these same demographics make up  a majority of the unhoused population that is affected by rampant “disruption” and abuse perpetrated by the tech industry.

Sit/Lie laws, originating in the 2000s on the West coast and in many cities including San Francisco, make it illegal for human beings to sit or lie down in “public” space. Yet private corporations, including Bird, Lime, Spin, and Lyft, occupy and profit from their theft of that same space.

It’s time we rethink how public space is misappropriated by nefarious profiteers.
It’s time to stop prioritzing private profit over public health and safety.
It’s time to disrupt tech companies and repossess the space they unjustly occupy for its rightful purpose as a public good.

It’s time to reclaim our public spaces.
